National Welfare Officer
|
Joseph Schwartz joined MOPH
in 1971 and is currently the Commander of Chapter 711 in Las Vegas as well as the
National Welfare Officer. His Chapter is the host chapter for the upcoming National
Convention and Patriot Schwartz is a key component to a successful event. He also
was a salaried National Service Officer for a number of years and has served as
a Volunteer Service Officer in his area for last 27 years. In addition to his current
MOPH involvement, he dedicates a countless number of hours meeting with Jewish War
Veterans as well as assisting homeless veterans. . . . . Patriot Schwartz served
in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945, with assignments
in both the European and Pacific theatres. He was with the 82nd Airborne Division,
504th PIR in June 1944 and jumped into Normandy six days before D-Day. . . . . For
his wartime efforts, Patriot Schwartz received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, three
Purple Hearts, Combat Infantry Badge, and Parachute Badge with 2 bronze stars. He
also has European Campaign Badges and Pacific Campaign ribbons . . . . After the
war, he became active in the banking and financing industry until retirement in
the Las Vegas area. . . . . In a fitting tribute to his wartime service, Nevada
Congressman John Porter has introduced legislation to rename a Las Vegas post office
as the “Sergeant Irving Joseph Schwartz Post Office Building.” Porter will also
document Patriot Schwartz’s historic service to his nation for the Veterans History
Project so it will be preserved at the Library of Congress. |
