The Military Order of the Purple Heart

National Assistance Sergeant-at-Arms
Born and raised in Central Virginia, graduated from Brookville High School, and joined the United States Marine Corps in April, 1968. During his enlistment Gary excelled in “Boot Camp” at Paris Island, SC, where he became an Expert Rifleman and with the top qualifying score in his Battalion was honored to become a member of the Marine Corps Rifle Team. Gary attained Special Missions Training at Camp Lejeune, NC where he volunteered to train in Recon. Because of his training he was assigned to Golf 2 nd Battalion, 4 th Marines in Vietnam where he was wounded and awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received in combat. During his deployment to Vietnam, Gary attained rank of Corporal and held various job titles; Company Point Man, Fire Team Leader, Recon Team member, Supply Sargent, Non Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) of Troops in the rear, and even became Barber for the Troops going on R&R. His final duty was in Okinawa, with Lima 3/9, where he served as Rifle & Range Instructor for the M16 Rifle and qualifying Troops headed for Vietnam.

Gary is involved with multiple Veteran Groups in the Lynchburg area and serves as Chapter Commanderof (Military Order of the Purple Heart) MOPH Chapter #1607, and as Secretary of (Vietnam Veterans of America) VVA Chapter #196, andSergeant-at- Arms for The Department of Virginia MOPH, and Assistant Sergeant-at- Arms for theNational Military Order of the Purple Heart. EachFriday Gary helps support the Monument Terrace Troop Rally in Lynchburg, VA., which meets to show support for all Active Duty Military.

Gary is married to his wife of 46 years, Linda. They have two sons and four granddaughters in Lynchburg & Leesburg, VA. He completed his Bachelor Degree in Business at Averett University and worked 35 years in the Printing Industry with Meredith/Burda and RR Donnelley in Chicago. He has since retired.

Gary became interested in music at the age of 13 and has been playing Guitar ever since. Gary writes many of his own songs and has played and recorded with various musical groups. He provides music for parties, weddings, and special events. He visits several Nursing & Retirement homes, and senior activities each month with a music program of Classic rock, Country, Patriotic, & Gospel songs. Gary realizes the need for music to be a part of people’s lives and always shares his Christian faith, and enjoys making people smile with his music.
